REAL, Quezon (PIA) – A surfing spot, locally known as barracuda, in Real, Quezon gained national attention as surfers from around the country gathered for the Pasaripoy 2024 National Surfing Competition.
Pasaripoy, a local term for ‘go with the waves,’ was the third leg of the Pilipinas Surfing National Tour sanctioned by United Philippine Surfing Association (UPSA). The municipal government of Real partnered with the Department of Tourism (DOT) CALABARZON and the provincial government of Quezon in staging the event.
Municipal Senior Tourism Operations Officer Benirose Marie Talabucan expressed the hope that the competition will pave the way for the town to become a leading surfing destination in the region.
Some 83 surfers who took part in the event along with Real talents came from Siargao, La Union, and Baler.
Facing the majestic Lamon Bay in Quezon, Real offers breath-taking views, rich biodiversity, and high waves, making it a perfect destination for a thrilling surfing experience.
“The local government of Real is making efforts to market our place as the nearest surfing destination outside of Metro Manila. This event will surely boost our tourism sector as this will add job opportunity for the locals and economic growth in the municipality,” Talabucan stated.
For 2024 World Surf League Longboard Division Champion Rogelio Esquivel, the PASARIPOY competition offers a unique opportunity to connect with fellow surfers from across the country.
“This competition brings us all together in one place, allowing us to share techniques, experiences, and camaraderie. It’s a great platform to strengthen the local surfing community,” Esquivel shared.
Aside from surfing, tourists can also enjoy a variety of other activities and attractions. They can trek to scenic waterfalls like Balagbag Falls and Nonok Falls, explore the lush forests through guided nature hikes, or experience river rafting along the refreshing waters of the Real River.
“We also have waterfalls, water tubing and right now we are also developing mountain activities and soon we will also have diving site here in Calabarzon,” the tourism officer stated.
Pasaripoy 2024 serves as a testament to the town’s potential and its dedication in striking a balance between tourism development and environmental conservation.
As the waves continue to crash in Real’s shores, it is clear that the serene coastal town is ready to ride the tide of progress, one surfboard at a time. (AM/PIA 4A)
