QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday announced that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has approved its budget intended to hire 5,000 non-teaching personnel.
In a statement, Vice President and concurrent DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte shared that with the help of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., DBM has approved the above provision in order to lessen the burden of administrative work to teachers.
“Soon, you will be relieved from the administrative responsibilities that prevent you from focusing or enhancing our students’ learning,” in her speech at the National Teachers’ Month kickoff at the Bohol Wisdom School, Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
Of the 5,000 non-teaching personnel, 3,500 of those are for Administrative Officer positions, while the 1,500 are for Project Development Officer positions.
This measure was conceptualized by the department after numerous consultations from school heads and teachers concerned of having too much administrative load, and cannot focus on their main job – to teach.
Apart from these, in the objective of prioritizing the welfare of teachers and other school personnel, VP Duterte shared that after School Year 2023 to 2024, the DepEd will give a 30-day uninterrupted rest.
“We make sure that in this year’s school calendar, teachers will have 30 straight days of rest during the break without any DepEd activity that requires volunteer work. On activities with voluntary participation, it will be scheduled after the 30-day break,” she said.
The National Teachers’ Month runs from September 5 to October 5, 2023 with the theme, “Together4Teachers.” (PIA-NCR)
