MANILA, (PIA) — House of Representatives Committee on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Chair and Navotas Representative Toby Tiangco urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to establish ethical guidelines as it incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) and technology into educational practices.
“We must acknowledge that AI is now part of our lives, so we need to ensure it is used responsibly,” Tiangco said. “While technology can empower Filipino students, we must also protect them from its potential risks.”
Tiangco welcomed DepEd’s efforts to integrate AI into learning modalities, calling it a necessary step towards modernizing education.
However, he stressed the importance of guidelines to shield teachers and students from misinformation and harmful interactions.
“There are many concerning aspects of technology, so it is crucial for DepEd to ensure that Filipino youth learn the proper use of AI,” the solon noted.
“We don’t want these tools to hinder their development or expose them to predatory online practices,” he added.
He also emphasized the need to equip educators with the knowledge to handle AI technologies effectively.
“Our educators must lead initiatives to ensure the ethical use of AI. These tools should improve lives, not harm them,” Tiangco said.
Tiangco further urged DepEd to ensure that AI technologies empower students and foster self-development.
“If our public education system can successfully harness EdTech and integrate technology into the curriculum, I am confident we will produce globally competitive graduates,” he added. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
