Restive Kanlaon volcano halts classes in nearby LGUs

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL (PIA) — The Municipality of La Castellana and La Carlota City suspended classes yesterday, September 10, due to increased activity of Kanlaon volcano since September 9.

La Castellana Mayor Rhumyla Mangilimutan suspended classes at all levels in both private and public schools in the town while the La Carlota City government suspended classes in Barangays Ara-al, Haguimit, San Miguel, and Yubo- all situated at the foot of the volcano.

La Castellana Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer John Asis said suspending classes was a precautionary measure to the restive volcano.

He added that the situation at the municipal proper remains normal and that the town is prepared for any eventualities.

Earlier, Negros Occ. Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said the provincial government is ready to extend assistance if needed as the province maintains close contact with the LGUs near the volcano.

La Carlota City-based Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) resident volcanologist Mari-Andylene Quintia said Phivolcs have recorded more than 200 volcano-tectonic earthquakes as of 11:00 am, September 10.

“The events ranged from magnitude 1 to magnitude 3 and its depth from 0 to 9 kilometers. Some events are felt in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental,” she said.

Aside from the volcanic earthquake, the volcano also released steam on the morning of Sept. 10, she added.

Quintia reminds the public to be ready and vigilant and to avoid entering into the 4 km. permanent danger zone because the increased volcanic activity could lead to an eruption. (AAL/Lljr/ PIA6 Negros Occidental)
