DIPOLOG CITY (PIA) — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), through its Sustainable Livelihood Program Association (SLPA), recently turned over a tourist boat to the Dicayas Small-Scale Fishers Association at River Park, Barangay Biasong, Dipolog City.

The project, costing over half a million pesos, aims to provide an additional source of income for 30 members of the association while enhancing tourism in the area.

The boat is expected to enhance visitor experience on the beauty of the Dicayas River.

DSWD Provincial Coordinator Therese Maravel B. Arcenal highlighted the parameters necessary for the association to qualify for future incentives, including maintaining positive gross sales and net income while ensuring at least 80% of its members remain united and cooperative.

City Agriculturist Kerr N. Porlas acknowledged the challenges encountered in completing the project but emphasized that the initiative brought renewed hope to the fishermen of Dicayas.

“I hope that your group stays united and works together so that the boat sails successfully, that tourists will continue to ride and patronize this attraction, which took its maiden voyage on March 24,” he added.

Concerned community member Alejandre Yting also expressed optimism about the project’s success, stating that this facility can also be utilized for emergencies, wherein he emphasized the importance of proper communication and emergency preparedness among boat operators.

“Operators should be well-trained to handle emergency situations. Our river must ensure a secure and safe area for these boats. Safety first!”  he commented.

With the successful launch of the River Cruise project, the Dicayas Small-Scale Fishers Association now looks forward to contributing to Dipolog City’s tourism growth while securing a stable livelihood for its members. (PJF/SQ-OJT/PIA9-Zamboanga del Norte)
