Rizal cops adopt ‘music diplomacy’ to deter crime

CALAMBA CITY (PIA) — Far from their typical tough looks, cops in the province of Rizal are transforming into something pleasant and endearing to the community in an apparent effort to deter criminality.

During the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, Rizal provincial police chief Lt. Col. Felipe Maraggun particularly hinted at their “Music Diplomacy,” which according to him has proven to be an effective way to establish rapport among local folks.

With peace and safety as their primary concern, Maraggun also claimed that the “Music Diplomacy” has so far been yielding positive results in promoting peace and safety in the community.

“We have started [the] music diplomacy [initiative] to bring our police closer to the community. We believe that this goes well with the marching orders of our President [Ferdinand Marcos Jr.] for effective law enforcement which is to bring the police closer to the community and the public,” Maraggun said.

Launched in 2023, the “Music Diplomacy” initiative aims to promote cooperation, understanding, and mutual respect in the community.

“I saw the potential of music diplomacy because personally, I have a talent for singing, and our law enforcers in Rizal are talented as well. When we have activities or events, our Rizal Police can support local government units and other organizations in our province.”

Sought to elaborate as to how the “Music Diplomacy” works, Maragun said : “I think music is an opportunity for us because it does not discriminate if you are rich or poor, or if you have nothing in life.  We understand each other through music.” (PB/PIA-4A)
