Road to Kaikanan falls completed; tourism seen to improve in La Union

SAN FERNANDO City, La Union (PIA) — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the rehabilitation of the access road to Kaikanan Falls in Sitio Candaroma, Barangay San Felipe, San Juan, La Union.

This newly improved road enhances accessibility for both locals and tourists, boosting the area’s potential as a key tourist destination.

Kaikanan Falls, known for its cool, refreshing waters, stands as one of the premier eco-tourism destinations in La Union.

This natural attraction continues to draw visitors seeking tranquility and adventure, further emphasizing the significance of the newly completed access road in enhancing tourism potential and providing better connectivity to the site.

The 6.10-meter-wide road, with robust stone masonry slope protection, ensures stability and reduces erosion risks.

To further enhance nighttime visibility and improve traveler safety, 15 energy-efficient LED streetlights were installed along the route.

Funded by the 2024 national budget, the project had a total cost of P19.2 million. Construction began on Feb. 6, 2024, and was completed on Sep. 4, 2024.

This infrastructure development is part of the Tourism Road Infrastructure Program (TRIP), an initiative designed to boost local tourism by improving access to key destinations.

DPWH Ilocos regional information officer Esperanza Tinaza highlighted the impact of the newly completed access road in driving local economic growth and promoting tourism.

“This development is expected to stimulate the local economy by creating opportunities for businesses and showcasing the region’s natural beauty,” Tinaza said.

She further underscored the department’s dedication to sustainable infrastructure development, emphasizing the broader benefits of the project.

“The improved road not only highlights the beauty of Kaikanan Falls but also empowers the community through increased tourism, business opportunities, and better connectivity,” she added.

In the proposed national budget for 2025, P900 billion has been allocated for public works, including funding for the TRIP, highlighting the government’s commitment to advancing infrastructure development.

Through this enhanced access road, the DPWH aims to foster sustainable tourism, create economic opportunities, and provide safer and more convenient travel to one of La Union’s most picturesque natural attractions. (CCMT/REB, PIA Region 1)
