Romance movie shot in Mati City pushes DOT to promote ‘film tourism’

DAVAO CITY—The Department of Tourism in Davao is pushing for the promotion of filmmaking in the region, this after Mati City was featured in a full-length film.

“We have a film tourism portfolio, we have officers and the central office working on this in fact they continue to coordinate with the regional offices to strengthen film tourism,” says Department of Tourism Regional Director Tanya Rabat Tan.

Tan says that she recently saw the trailer of the movie “Fleeting” which was shot in Mati City, Davao Oriental.

“Fleeting” stars actors RK Bagatsing and Janella Salvador is a romance-drama about an ambitious and hardworking student pilot (Salvador) who meets and forms a connection with an easygoing surfer (Bagatsing) in the city of Mati.

The film which is part of the Cine Panalo Film Festival organized by supermarket chain Puregold is currently being shown at the selected Gateway cinemas in Araneta Center Metro Manila from March 14-25.

“When you watch it, you will really fall in love with Mati City,” Tan describes the movie trailer.

Tan says that the film shoot in Mati will inspire other local government units to promote film tourism as it is an avenue for them to promote the tourist destination in their localities.

“This will inspire cities, I am sure after this film lalo pang makikilala ang Mati (Mati will be more known),” Tan said.

Tan says the local government of Mati City has been very supportive of the film shoot.

The cast of the film paid a courtesy visit to Mati Mayor Michelle Rabat during their shoot in January of this year.

Mati is proud to have been selected as a filming location for the upcoming movie. Your presence in our community is greatly anticipated, and we are eager to witness how our picturesque landscapes will be featured in your film,” Mayor Michelle Rabat said in a statement during the visit of the film actors.

Mati City is known for its pristine white-sand beaches and surfing spots. Dahican Beach where much of the film was shot is a seven kilometer stretch of white sand coastline facing the Pacific Ocean and is a well-visited tourism spot in the province of Davao Oriental. (PIA/RG Alama)
