CALAMBA CITY, Laguna (PIA) – The Calamba Water District (CWD) bares the first primary treatment process in Laguna to use an Ultra Violet-Hydro Optic Disinfection System to provide the public with safer and contaminant-free water.
According to CWD General Manager Exequiel A. Aguilar Jr., the process is part of their high-impact project initiatives designed to ensure that the water circulating in the community is safe to drink and free from harmful chemicals to prevent any negative effects on human health.
“This is a chemical-free disinfection process and the primary method we are now using is UV, while the chlorination that previously used is now treated as our secondary method. Some residents are saying that the water here in Calamba tastes better and no longer has the chlorine taste”, Aguilar said.
Although only 65% of the UV treated water currently comes from the Bucal water pumping station, Aguilar said that their goal is to achieve 100% UV treatment process for the whole city within the next two years.
He added: “We hope to move towards the full implementation of this project in the whole city within the next two years and supply whole Calamba with UV-treated water.”
To date, CWD serves 47 out of 54 barangays in Calamba, ensuring that the community receives a safe and reliable water supply.
In addition to the UV disinfection system, CWD is also gearing towards modernization to better serve its customers by using Smart Water Management System, an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered system to remotely monitor water supplies and track water pressure across various pumping stations.
Furthermore, to comply with the Republic Act 9275 or the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004, the water utility has established its own septage treatment facility to prevent water contamination in Laguna de Bay and its tributaries and provide new service for their concessionaires.
These high impact projects highly demonstrates the CWD’s commitment to environmental sustainability and dedicated compliance with national water quality standards, the general manager adds. (CO/PIA-4A)
