QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — In a bid to safeguard students from extreme heat, Mayor Francis Zamora has enacted Executive Order No. FMZ-193, which introduces adjusted class schedules for all public schools and child development centers in the city.
Under the revised timetable, morning classes will be held from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., while afternoon sessions will run from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. This adjustment is designed to minimize students’ exposure to the hottest parts of the day, specifically between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., thereby reducing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
To ensure that learning continues, students will be assigned supplemental academic activities to complete at home during the hours when school is not in session.
For private elementary and high schools, as well as colleges and universities in San Juan, the city government has delegated the decision regarding class schedules to individual school administrations.
However, local officials strongly encourage these institutions to avoid holding in-person classes during peak heat hours to prioritize student safety.
Mayor Zamora highlighted that this proactive measure reflects the city’s commitment to prioritizing student health while adapting to the challenges posed by changing climate conditions.
The local government will continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary support to educational institutions in effectively implementing this policy. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
