SEC steps up financial literacy vs investment scams

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato (PIA) — The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) continues to strengthen its campaign to protect the public against investment scams.

Lawyer Katrina Ponco-Estares, director of the SEC-Davao Extension Office, said that recently, their office conducted a series of financial literacy seminars in Regions 11 and 12.

The seminars aimed to provide participants with practical advice on managing their finances and identifying fraudulent investments.

The activities targeted local government employees, students, and members of different associations as Estares emphasized the importance of the financial literacy seminar in highlighting financial knowledge.

She added that, aside from the seminar, their office is regularly issuing advisories to raise awareness about investments that are considered scams.

So, reminder lang po na mag ingat po tayo sa pagdeal ‘pag mayroon pong mga indibidwal o mga grupo na nagsosolicit ng investment sa inyo,” the director said.

(I would like to remind you to exercise caution when interacting with individuals or groups who are seeking investments.)

To further enlighten the public if an investment is legitimate, Estares urged them to check with the SEC website or to download the SEC Check App.

She stated that the SEC plans to strengthen its partnership with various agencies to further promote the campaign next year.

(May our partnership with various government agencies and private entities continue so we can keep promoting financial literacy and avoid investing in scams.)

According to Estares, the newly established SEC Koronadal Extension Office is set to commence its full operation next year.

She then urged the public to utilize the agency’s services for financial guidance. (Photo: SEC-Davao Extension Office)
