Senator Loren champions cultural heritage in National Arts Month 2025

MANILA, (PIA) — As the nation celebrates National Arts Month this February, Senator Loren Legarda, a distinguished “Dangal ng Haraya” awardee and Patron of Arts and Culture, urges all Filipinos to embrace and honor the country’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.

Legarda emphasizes that culture and the arts are vital components of nation-building, serving as the “heartbeat” of the nation and a reflection of the Filipino spirit.

The arts and culture are the heartbeat of our nation, keeping alive the wisdom and artistry of our forebears while shaping the narratives that define us today,” she said.

National Arts Month was established through Presidential Proclamation No. 683 by then-President Corazon Aquino in 1991, recognizing the invaluable contributions of Filipino artists and cultural workers.

Legarda has been a driving force in integrating culture and arts into the national agenda, establishing the Senate Committee on Culture and the Arts as a standalone entity.

Culture is not just a segment of governance; it is the foundation of our identity,” Legarda said, highlighting her commitment to safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage through landmark legislation.

Among her achievements are the Cultural Mapping Law and the National Cultural Heritage Act, aimed at protecting and conserving the country’s diverse cultural assets.

Legarda has also played a pivotal role in supporting Philippine arts through initiatives such as cultural television programs and the establishment of the UPLB Sculpture Garden, which features permanent exhibitions of notable artists’ works.

Engaging with our cultural roots ensures that we preserve the memory of our past, allowing its significance to grow and inspire future generations,” she added.

In her advocacy for sustainable livelihoods, Legarda supports initiatives like the National Arts and Crafts Fair, which empowers small businesses and indigenous communities. She has worked closely with the Philippine Fiber Development Authority to establish weaving centers and promote local textiles.

Legarda is also committed to advancing cultural diplomacy, believing that the arts can foster international relations. Her efforts have reintroduced the Philippines to the Venice Biennale and secured the country as the Guest of Honor at the 2025 Frankfurt Book Fair.

Culture and the arts are powerful tools for soft power, allowing us to build bridges across nations,” Legarda asserted, reinforcing her belief in the importance of cultural exchange in promoting national pride.

This year’s National Arts Month, themed “Ani ng Sining, Diwa at Damdamin,” highlights the ability of the arts to inspire and unite.

Senator Legarda continues to lead efforts to ensure that Filipino artistry thrives, fostering a love for the nation’s cultural legacy among future generations. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
