MANILA, (PIA) — Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Deputy Director-General Ares Gutierrez addressed graduates of a social media training program for military personnel on Friday, highlighting the growing threat of cyber warfare and disinformation campaigns against the Philippines.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Social Media Product Development and Management Training, Gutierrez warned of a 300 percent increase in malicious online activity targeting the country since the start of 2024.
“As administrators of military social media accounts, you are on the frontline of what we call the ‘war on information,’” Gutierrez told the graduates, mostly young service members he described as “digital natives.”

Gutierrez cited U.S.-based cybersecurity firm Resecurity’s reports of heightened cyber attacks, many allegedly linked to China-affiliated groups.
He mentioned specific threats from hacker groups like “Mustang Panda,” “Exodus Security,” and “Death Note Hackers.”
The PIA official emphasized the agency’s role in countering disinformation, particularly regarding issues in the West Philippine Sea.
He also highlighted PIA’s support for various government task forces and its upcoming campaign to promote peace and reconciliation efforts.
Gutierrez then encouraged cooperation between PIA staff and military personnel in addressing these emerging national security challenges.
The ceremony was held at the AFP Civil Relations Service headquarters, with Major General Ramon Sagala and other military officials in attendance. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
