DIGOS City, Davao del Sur (PIA) — A total of seven students from Davao del Sur qualified for the scholarship offered by the Department of Science and Technology- Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).
DOST-Davao del Sur director Leslie Cancho said that the seven students from the province here were among the 2,699 qualifiers out of 12,556 students nationwide who took the examination on August 27.
The seven qualifiers from Davao del Sur included Jane Mendez of Digos City, Julidee Ranara of Sta. Cruz and Gerard Regondola of Hagonoy town for the scholarship for Science and Technology under the Republic Act 7687; while the qualifiers of scholarship based on Republic Act 101612 were Oscar Villapa Garcisco Jr. of Sta. Cruz, Alyxynial Diaz Liray of Hagonoy, and Lennerose Villafore-Radores also of Hagonoy town. Haniah Julienne Lumacad Dominice of Sta. Cruz was a merit qualifier for the DOST-SEI Junior Level Science Scholarship.
Cancho explained that junior-level science scholarships are offered to students in their third year of college.
She said when they applied, for instance through the 2023 JLSS, they should be a regular-second year college students enrolled in a DOST-SEI priority Science & Technology course at identified universities in the Second Semester of 2022-2023.
“Under the JLSS, we have three types of scholarships like the RA 7687, RA 101612, and merit,” she said.
Cancho said the Junior Level Science Scholarship Program aims to provide scholarships that will finance the education of talented and deserving students in their third year of college who are pursuing a degree in science and technology.
She said that as a merit qualifier, Haniah Lumacad Dominice received recognition for her high aptitude in Science and Mathematics.
“They still have to undergo an orientation for them to hear the conditions in the scholarship agreement. Once they are amenable to the conditions and would choose to accept the scholarship agreement, duly signed by them and the DOST, then we can say they are DOST scholars,” she said.
Cancho said that last year, there were 10 qualifiers for the DOST scholarship in Davao del Sur.
Lennerose Radores of Hagonoy town, a second year Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering student at the University of Southeastern Philippines – Tagum Campus, is happy with the result of the scholarship exams.
She said she is confident to finish her course considering that the government is helping her.
“The scholarship to be given by the DOST-SEI is a big boost to our family because it ensures my free matriculation fee, books, and monthly allowance. Surely, it guarantees that the income of my father instead of sustaining my needs will be used for the education of my younger siblings,” Radores said.
Alyxynial Diaz Liray, another qualifier from Hagonoy town, said that ‘though he did not expect to pass the scholarship examination because of the tight schedule. he is thankful that he made it to be among the seven qualifiers.
Liray said the scholarship from the DOST lessens the financial burden on his parents, noting “We will not rely much on the work of my father to pay for my studies.”
Liray said his inspiration to strive harder is his family.
He said the DOST scholarship grant will not only do good for his studies but for his parents also.
“Education is the only treasure that our parents give to us that no one can take from me all the time. I will value this treasure that will surely guide me to have a brighter future, especially now that it is guaranteed to be free by the government,” Liray said. (JSGD/Davao del Sur)
