CAMIGUIN (PIA) — Empowering 19 senior high school students from the national high schools of Mambajao and Yumbing, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)-Camiguin conducted an 80-hour work immersion program from February 4 to 19. The program equipped the students with essential digital literacy, coding, and mobile robotics skills to prepare them for future information and communication technology (ICT) careers.
With the theme, “We Make Coding Fun for the Youth of Camiguin,” students were taught skills, particularly in handling Google Spreadsheets, Google Docs, and Minecraft Education coding.
“Empowering the next generation starts here. We are committed to expanding opportunities for young minds in Camiguin, preparing them for exciting ICT careers in the digital era,” said DICT-Camiguin Provincial Officer James Sagocsoc.
Sharing how the immersion creates opportunities for the youth, James Nathaniel Diaz, a Grade 12 Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) student from Mambajao, said it is a way for them to keep up with technology advancements.
“Dapat pud makatuon ta sa mga technology nga angay tun-an kay para dili ta ma-late bitaw or dili ta mabyaan sa uban kay sa technology. Wala’y impossible,” he said. (It is important that we also learn the advancements of technology in order to not be left behind by others. Nothing is impossible.)
Participants deemed the program helpful, as it expands the opportunities available for ICT youths in Camiguin and aligns with their chosen career paths.

Shaira Acson, a student from Yumbing, said, “Nakatabang siya sa akoa kay ang akoa man gyud plano kuhaon sa future kay mag kuan ko sa IT tapos mag-focus siya sa katong cyber security. Mao nang makadungog ko nga katong gipangtudlo ni sir sa akoa is dako na kaayo ang advantage bitaw in the near future.”
(It greatly helped me because my planned course is IT, focusing on cyber security. That’s why the things that sir taught me were an advantage for my future.)
Through initiatives like this, Sagocsoc said DICT Camiguin paves the way for the next generation of tech professionals, ensuring students are well equipped with career-related abilities.
“I highly recommend this program to future [participants in the immersion program], as it would be a great choice of immersion,” said Christian Roa, a STEM student from Mambajao.
DICT designed the program to help students apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, build practical skills, and explore career interests. (JPDA/PIA-10)
