SONA 2023: Wawa project to increase water supply in Rizal, Metro Manila

CALAMBA CITY (PIA) – The government’s flagship infrastructure project – the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project in Rizal province – will help address water supply demand in the metropolis and nearby provinces as it enters its second phase.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. noted in his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 24 that the government allocated P14.6 billion for water supply projects, which will benefit communities across the country.

“The water supply of NCR (National Capital Region) and Rizal received a significant boost from the first phase of the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project. The water supply will increase as the project enters the second phase,” the President said.

Once completed, the Wawa project can supply 518 million liters per day (MLD) of raw water to more than 500,000 households in the eastern sector of Metro Manila and Rizal.

Developer Prime Infrastructure Capital, Inc. said the project involves the construction of two water supply infrastructures, including the Tayabasan Weir which started commercial operations in October 2022 and the Upper Wawa Dam which is expected to be completed in 2025.

It will be the biggest water source built since 1967.

Antipolo City Mayor Jun Ynares had said the water facility can solve the ongoing water supply problem in Metro Manila and Rizal province.

The Metropolitan Works and Sewerage Systems (MWSS) said that the Wawa project will augment water supply in the East Zone by 30 percent, benefiting customers particularly in the City of Antipolo and the Municipality of Rodriguez, Rizal.

Aside from its role in the region’s water supply, the Wawa project includes a masterplan that will make Wawa an eco-tourism site that will provide a long-term positive impact to surrounding communities.

Inaugurated in January, the Tayabasan Weir and Calawis Water Treatment Plant can deliver up to 80 MLD of raw water to Manila Water and the MWSS. (PB)
