SORSOGON CITY, Sorsogon (PIA) — Students of Sorsogon State University (SorSU) Graduate School has recently donated books to the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
The books will be used by students who require resources on poetry, oral traditions, heritage, tourism, guidebooks for writing research, school-based management handbooks, and localized instructional materials, among others.
They donated 12 books to the DepEd provincial and city schools divisions. These books include prototype lesson plans, reading modules, local poetry collections, a guidebook for writing research, a school-based management handbook, and other localized instructional materials.
On the other hand, PIA Sorsogon Information Center received four books on oral traditions, heritage, tourism, and history. These books will serve as reference materials for researchers who visit the office.
The event was attended by the authors, research advisers, representatives from DepEd and PIA, as well as other stakeholders.
Susan Janer, the dean of the Graduate School, stated that the primary purpose of the turnover is to present a tangible product of the theses and dissertations created by the students of their graduate school.
“Previously, we did not require tangible outputs, what happened was that all the theses and dissertations were piled up at the library, accumulated dust, and there is no guaranteed use or utilization of the outputs,” she explained.
“Now, we would like to guarantee and make sure that the outputs and the findings are properly disseminated and utilized, that’s why we required students to produce outputs out of their theses and dissertations,” she said.
Janer mentioned that, for the time being, the materials presented during the ceremony are exclusively for the students pursuing a Master of Arts in Education and a Doctor of Education.
Cheryll Bermudo, assistant schools division superintendent of DepEd Sorsogon, expressed her gratitude for the donated books.
“I am amazed by the SorSU’s initiative, especially that we are the direct beneficiary of these theses and dissertations, the products or outputs of the brilliant collaboration between and among the graduate students, the DepEd and the Sorsogon State University,” Bermudo said.
James Christian Nabong, senior education program specialist of DepEd Sorsogon City, said the turnover was a testament to SorSU’s dedication and commitment to advancing knowledge and improving education practices.
“These research outputs will serve as vital references for evidence-based decision-making and continuous improvement in our schools,” he added.
Sarah Llaguna, a public school teacher and a graduate student at SorSU Graduate School, shared her joy as she handed over her book titled “Spoken Word Poetry sa Probinsya ng Sorsogon.”
It is a book where common spoken word poetry in the province of Sorsogon is compiled and written to a page but can be performed for an audience.
Llaguna also emphasized the significance of the turnover, stating that it did not only recognize her hard work and output but it also went beyond being a mere requirement for their master’s degree. (With reports from Kyla Jane Pancho and Romell Baria, PIA 5/Sorsogon)
