South Cotabato pioneers Waste-to-Energy project in PH

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato (PIA) — The provincial government of South Cotabato and the municipality of Surallah are set to transform their waste management landscape with a P1.2-billion Waste-to-Energy (WTE) project, the first of its kind in the Philippines.

The initiative, which is in partnership with Alterna Verde Corporation, focuses on converting organic waste into valuable resources and promises to address pressing environmental challenges while generating clean energy and supporting sustainable agriculture.

Nervy C. Santiago, CEO and General Manager of Alterna Verde Corporation stated that this project aims to help waste disposal methods and introduce biogas to communities.

Nagpapasalamat ako sa (I am thankful to) South Cotabato at (and) LGU Surallah for this collaboration and hopefully we can help to transform waste into energy for people in the South,” Santiago said.

Located in Surallah, the project will utilize the Sustainable Environmental Resource Genesis System (SERGS) technology to convert non-recyclable waste into biogas, a renewable energy source, and organic fertilizer.

By diverting waste from landfills, the project offers a sustainable alternative to traditional disposal methods, which are increasingly burdened by limited land availability.

The generated biogas will serve as a clean energy source, potentially reducing electricity costs and benefiting residents across six municipalities in South Cotabato’s third district: Tboli, Lake Sebu, Sto. Niño, Norala, Surallah, and Banga.

Moreover, the production of high-quality organic fertilizer will contribute to sustainable agricultural practices, fostering a more environmentally friendly and productive farming sector.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing for the WTE project was held at the South Cotabato Capitol with officials from LGU SOUTH Cotabato, Municipality of Surallah and Alterna Verde Corporation. (SZT, PIA Region 12)
