Speaker Romualdez condemns China Coast Guard aggression in West Philippine Sea

MANILA, (PIA) — Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez issued a strong condemnation regarding recent acts of aggression by the China Coast Guard in the West Philippine Sea.

This statement follows the ramming of the BRP Teresa Magbanua, one of the Philippines’ largest and most modern patrol vessels, which the speaker described as a serious violation of international law and an affront to the nation’s dignity.

China Coast Guard vessel 5205 collides with the BRP Teresa Magbanua near Escoda Shoal on August 31, 2024, as seen in this screenshot from a video shared by the Philippine Coast Guard.

This incident marks the fifth aggression by the China Coast Guard this month, escalating tensions over the Escoda (Sabina) Shoal, an area clearly within the Philippines’ 370-kilometer Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Romualdez called for serious reflection on these actions, emphasizing the need for the Philippines to reassess its strategies for protecting its rights and interests in its waters.

To the government of the People’s Republic of China, we express our deep dismay at these developments,” Romualdez said.

He reaffirmed the Filipino people’s commitment to peace while insisting on the respect for Philippine sovereignty. “While we hope for constructive dialogue, our patience is being tested,” he added.

The speaker urged the Department of Foreign Affairs to escalate the matter to the highest levels of international diplomacy, calling on the global community, including the United Nations, to take note of these concerning actions.

Romualdez also emphasized the necessity for the Philippines to consider stronger measures, including enhancing its presence in the West Philippine Sea and reinforcing alliances to ensure adequate protection of its sovereign rights.

He called for unity among Filipinos during these challenging times, asserting, “Let us stand together to defend our nation, sending a clear message that we are prepared to protect what is rightfully ours while seeking peace.” (JCO/PIA-NCR)
