“SPMC Strengthens Leprosy Treatment Efforts with Free Medication.”

DAVAO CITY (PIA) — The Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) continues to provide free multi-drug therapy for leprosy patients, ensuring that those affected by the disease receive proper treatment and support.

Dr. Silvino Rey Pino, Senior Resident of the Department of Dermatology at SPMC, explained that the hospital administers multi-drug therapy in packet form, with treatment durations, depending on the severity of the case.

“For our patients, we usually allocate these medications, and they are given for up to 6 to 12 months, depending on the severity of the patient’s condition,“ Dr. Pino said.

SPMC has recorded 35 leprosy cases in 2024 across various areas in Mindanao, with patients identified from Davao City, Davao del Sur, Cotabato, Kidapawan, Panabo, and Surigao, according to health authorities.

Regarding biopsy procedures, he noted that costs typically range from ₱4,000 to ₱4,200. However, Dr. Pino said that these expenses can be covered through Lingap and other social welfare programs, making the procedure accessible at no cost to eligible patients.

“Puwede po natin itong ma-avail through lingap or maipasok sa social welfare programs para ma libre sa mga pasyente.” Dr. Pino said.

(These can be availed through Lingap or through the social welfare programs so patients won’t have to pay.)

SPMC remains dedicated to ensuring accessible healthcare for leprosy patients, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, continuous treatment, and financial support to improve patient outcomes and combat stigma surrounding the disease. (REC / PIA XI)
