TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, January 2 (PIA) – The Social Security System (SSS) is targeting to enroll the newly-elected barangay officials to be the next set of beneficiaries for the government’s social security coverage.
This was disclosed by SSS Chief Executive Officer and President Rolando Ledesma-Macasaet during the Stakeholders’ Forum in Bohol recently.
Macasaet said SSS has been looking at the possibility of increasing the system’s 42 million members.
Barangay officials, even if they are government workers, do not have employer-employee relationship and are not eligible for the government service insurance system.
Once they enroll with SSS in their first term of office, a barangay official will only need 12 more months of contribution to have a fully matured policy.
Benefits
For a minimum contribution of around P500 as voluntary member, a member can avail of the Sickness Benefit, which is a daily cash allowance paid for the number of days a member is unable to work due to sickness or injury.
They can also avail of Maternity Benefit, a daily cash allowance granted to a female member who is unable to work due to childbirth or miscarriage.
There is also the Disability Benefit, a cash benefit granted either as a monthly pension or a lump-sum amount to a member who becomes permanently disabled, either partially or totally.
Members who can no longer work due to old age can avail of the retirement benefit, which is a cash benefit granted either as a monthly compensation or a lump-sum amount.
In cases of death, a member’s survivors can claim a cash benefit either as a monthly compensation or lump-sum amount.
Members can also avail of funeral benefit, which is a P20,000 reimbursement to whoever paid for the burial expenses of the deceased member.
A member can also opt for a salary loan, which is granted to an employed, currently-paying self-employed or voluntary member to help a member meet his short-term credit needs. (RAHC/PIA7 Bohol)
