DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Feb. 3 (PIA) — A 50-meter long cable suspended steel hanging bridge will be built in Brgy. Abis, Mabinay town by the GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc. (GMAKFI).
GMAKFI officials together with officials from the Philippine Army (PA) led by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Visayas Commanding Officer LtGen. Benedict Arevalo and PA 302nd Infantry Brigade Commander BGen. Leonardo Peña, and the Mabinay local government recently led the ceremonial groundbreaking and signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to formally the start the project.
The hanging bridge will be built over Cansana-an River with the project cost pegged at P6-M.
Residents were assured that the hanging bridge will be able to endure a 300kph wind speed or water current and can carry a five-ton load.
Arevalo thanked GMAKFI for initiating this project, adding that this would leave a long-term positive impact on the lives of residents in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).
“We call for unity and ask the cooperation from the locals for the successful realization of the Cansana-an River Hanging Bridge Project,” Arevalo said.
Peña also relayed the PA’s support and assured that the government troops are here to ensure that the construction of the hanging bridge will push through smoothly.
“This effort is a tangible demonstration of the government and our partner stakeholders’ sincerity in bringing peace and progress in the communities,” Peña added.
The 52nd Engineering Construction Battalion will also send personnel to help in the construction.
GMAKFI Executive Vice President Rikki Escudero Catibog promised the community stakeholders they will complete the project in three months.
