TANDAG CITY, SURIGAO DEL SUR – In a significant step towards lasting peace, the provincial government of Surigao del Sur, in collaboration with the 4th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army (PA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), recently welcomed 91 former rebels back into civilian life.
The ceremony, held at the Governor Vicente T. Pimentel Multi-Purpose Hall in Tandag City, saw the former rebels, now referred to as “friends rescued (FR),” take the oath of allegiance, signifying their commitment to peace and reintegration.
Governor Alexander Pimentel, who also serves as chairperson of the Caraga Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC), emphasized the importance of this event, stating that it not only marks a new chapter for the former rebels but also demonstrates their resilience and desire to rebuild their lives.
“Alyas Dodong,” an FR and resident of San Miguel town, shared his heartfelt sentiment, capturing the collective hope of those returning to civilian life. “Change can be achieved in ways that do not bring pain and suffering to their families and communities,” he said, urging others still in the mountains to choose peace.
The ceremony included the symbolic turnover of surrendered firearms, underscoring the commitment of both the former rebels and the government to work together for a peaceful future. The event serves as a testament to the shared resolve to replace conflict with opportunity and to build a brighter future for all.
The provincial government also highlighted its programs designed to support these former rebels as they transition to civilian life, emphasizing access to skills development, educational programs, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. Through these initiatives, Surigao del Sur sustained in advancing its vision on lasting peace and growth, providing new pathways for those who once knew only conflict.
Meanwhile, the former rebels will undergo due process to avail the program on Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (ECLIP) of the government. (PIA-Surigao del Sur)
