Tabuan-lasa, Basilan declared as ASG-Free

ISABELA CITY, Basilan (PIA) – The municipality of Tabuan-lasa in the province of Basilan was officially declared as Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG)-Free, marking a major achievement in the province’s ongoing journey towards peace and development.

The declaration was celebrated with a ceremony attended by military and government officials, community leaders, and residents. It was highlighted by the presentation of 14 surrendered firearms, including high-powered weapons such as a Barrett .50 Cal Sniper Rifle and M16A1 Rifles which demonstrated the community’s unwavering commitment to peace and security.

In his speech, Brigadier General Alvin V. Luzon, commander of the 101st Infantry “Three Red Arrows” Brigade, Philippine Army, emphasized the importance of unity in achieving peace.

“The declaration of Tabuan-lasa as ASG-Free is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. The bravery and cooperation of the local community, combined with the dedication of our security forces, have made this day possible,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mayor Moner S. Manisan praised the significance of this declaration, stating that it marked not only the end of a threat but also the beginning of a new chapter for his town.

“Our journey towards peace has been challenging, but our resolve has never wavered. We will continue to work hand in hand to ensure that our community remains safe and prosperous,” Mayor Manisan expressed.

On his part, Governor Jim Salliman lauded the efforts of the community and all stakeholders involved in achieving this milestone. He emphasized that the declaration is part of a broader initiative in Basilan province to address sources of conflict, including the eradication of clan feuds (rido) and the promotion of the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) program. These efforts aim to foster reconciliation, unity, and the reduction of illegal firearms, contributing to long-term peace and stability in the province.

The event concluded with a symbolic unveiling of a peace marker and the release of white doves and balloons, symbolizing hope and a commitment to peace. The ceremony also saw stakeholders sign a commitment pledge reaffirming their dedication to maintaining Tabuan-lasa’s ASG-Free status.

Tabuan-lasa, a historic transit point for ASG members, has long been plagued by the presence of the terrorist group. However, through collective efforts and determination, the local community, in partnership with security forces, has successfully eradicated ASG activities in the area.

As Tabuan-lasa celebrates its newfound status as an ASG-Free zone, it joins two other areas in Basilan – Lantawan and Lamitan City – that have already achieved this milestone. With continued cooperation and commitment from all stakeholders, Basilan province is poised to move forward towards a brighter future marked by peace and prosperity.
