CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) — Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela, highlighted the significance of the May 2025 elections in supporting the country’s efforts in the West Philippine Sea.

“If we truly care about our fight in the West Philippine Sea, we have to make sure that our elected officials—whether in the Senate, Congress, or local government units—are those who will support the national government, particularly President Bongbong Marcos, in standing firm for our territorial rights in the West Philippine Sea,” he said.

Tarriela warned that electing pro-China candidates to the Senate or Congress could hinder the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard in securing the necessary resources to defend the country’s claims.

“The most important patriotic contribution that you can for the West Philippine Sea is to elect right and righteous leaders who will stand up for the national interest of our country,” he added.

The PCG spokesperson also pointed out the challenge of misinformation and fake news in defending the West Philippine Sea. He urged Filipinos who support the country’s position to act when encountering such content.

Tarriela suggested that individuals report fake news to Meta for removal or leave a comment to clarify the correct information. (APB/PIA-10)
