BONTOC, Mountain Province (PIA) — The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) conducted its first Halal Awareness Seminar in Mountain Province at the Multi-Purpose Building in Poblacion, Bontoc, on August 12, 2024.
The event was attended by Community Training and Employment Coordinators of the different municipalities, members of the Provincial Technical Education and Skills Development Committee, and trainers and accredited assessors in the province.
TESDA Acting Provincial Director Melita D. Pinic explained said halal means permitted or lawful according to the laws of Islam. By integrating halal awareness into Technical and Vocational Education and Training programs, individuals are better prepared for careers in industries where these standards are important. This will not only improve their job readiness and career prospects but also supports industry compliance, builds consumer trust, and promotes ethical business practices.
The training on halal awareness can be beneficial to the participants as it ensures them that they are well-equipped in meeting the demands of industries where halal standards are significant, Pinic said.
Data show that the halal food industry is booming worldwide with halal products now being associated with food hygiene and safety, and health even by among non-Muslims.
Jones G. Malwagay of the Department of Trade and Industry, who served as the resource speaker, discussed the concepts and principles of Halal including its significance and application in different sectors, and the processes and requirements required to obtain Halal certification.
Training participant Ella Mae Membrere said the training has broadened her understanding about Halal.
