LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte (PIA) – The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA)-Ilocos Norte commenced the yearly conduct of the Provincial Skills Competition on Nov. 28 at the St. Freinademetz Theater of Divine World College of Laoag, here.
The skills competition aims to promote skill excellence and provide opportunities for young individuals to compete and demonstrate their competencies in particular vocational skills using task and industry-based scenarios.
The two-day competition was participated in by the following institutions: Bangui Institute of Technology, Burgos Agro-Industrial School, Mariano Marcos State University College of Industrial Technology, Zenith College of Hospitality, and Culinary Arts and Business Management Inc. Northwestern University Incorporated, Far East Computer Technology Inc., Bacarra Vocational Training Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (BV-TIHOST) Inc., Igama Colleges Foundation Inc., and Marcos Agro-Industrial School.

Over 250 participants joined the said competition, including 25 competitors competing in 11 trade areas such as graphic design technology, health and social care, welding carpentry, wall and floor tilling, bakery, restaurant service, cookery, fashion technology, electrical installation, and electronics.
In different trade areas, 25 experts or coaches and 18 workshop supervisors or guest experts served as the judges during the actual demonstration.
According to Socorro Galanto, Provincial Director of TESDA Ilocos Norte, the winning participants, competitors, and experts in their respective trade areas will participate in higher levels of competition.
Meanwhile, winners got medals, certificates, and cash prizes of P3,000, P2,000, and P1,000 for gold, silver, and bronze, plus the opportunity to compete in the upcoming Regional Skills Competitions.Top of Form

During the awarding ceremony, Haydeeh Baldino, first-time contender from Zenith College Delegate, bagged three gold medals with Diploma of Excellence in three trade areas.
Rovielyn Manding, Rowel Menor, and Rosa Kamille Espiritu, won first place in the restaurant service, cookery and baking categories respectively.
“It is not only competition but also unity and love for the province of Ilocos Norte. As a first-time school participant, it is like David against Goliath. But we took the challenge; we wanted to give our students exposure to a world skills-based competition,” said Baldino.
Also, the two competitors from Igama College Foundation, Inc., Gallelie Myrrh Adecer Fagaragan, won a gold medal, and Mikylla Zamora got a silver medal in the health and social care sector. (JCR/MJTAB/CEC PIA Ilocos Norte)
