ILOILO CITY (PIA) — The local government of Tigbauan, Iloilo has unveiled the new “Panay Landing” bas-relief structure on March 18, 2025 as part of the celebration for the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Panay.
The structure, which can be found attached to the Panay Landing Memorial marker in Brgy. Parara serves as a reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for Panay’s freedom, ensuring that future generations understand and honor its legacy.
Mayor Virgilio Teruel led the unveiling of the structure together with other municipal officials, war veterans, and peacekeeping forces, noting that the masterpiece is a symbol of triumph, not only for Tigbauan but for the entire Panay region as this artistic representation “will stand as a lasting tribute to the resilience and unity of the people of Tigbauan who played a crucial role in securing freedom.”
The commemoration also featured a wreath-laying ceremony and a 21-gun salute, honoring the bravery and sacrifices of Free Panay Guerilla Forces who fought for the island’s freedom during World War II.
Teruel, in his message, said that the event aimed not only to honor the gallantry of those who fought but also to instill pride in the younger generation about the importance of their history.
“We are here again to show the world that we, in Tigbauan, have not forgotten the events of March 18, 1945. We remember the bravery of our forefathers, and we honor the heroes of World War II in Panay. We are also deeply grateful to the US Forces who helped us achieve our freedom and independence,” he said.
“More importantly, we are here to educate the younger generation on the importance of our history, and to instill in them a sense of pride and nationalism,” Teruel added.
The mayor also called for reflection on the role of the present generation in preserving the freedom that the previous one fought for, citing that the true meaning of the sacrifices made by soldiers is realized when their struggle leads to a better future for the next generation.
“Our heroes sacrificed their lives on the battlefield so that the next generation of Filipinos would have a brighter future. Have we, the living, done our part? If we have, then we can truly say that our heroes did not die in vain,” Teruel stressed.
Other activities prepared by the LGU Tigbauan during the commemoration of 80th Liberation of Panay included the Panay Landing Film Caravan, Liberation Run 2025, Zumba sa Kahilwayan, Fluvial Parade, History Talk, and Quiz Bee, among others.
The Liberation of Panay was a pivotal moment in the country’s fight for freedom during World War II. The successful campaign freed Panay, Guimaras, and Romblon from Japanese occupation, marking a significant step toward the country’s eventual liberation. (AAL/JNH/PIA Iloilo)
