Zamboanga City (PIA) – The Bureau of Customs confiscated tobacco and cigarette products worth P1.89 billion in 152 operations, with P190 million seized in Indanan, Sulu alone, from January to July 2023.
During the 1st Zamboanga City Peace and Order Summit, Richard Hart S. Paragas, External Affairs Officer of Western Mindanao Philippine Tobacco Institute, discussed the importance of investing in unity and the role of businesses in peace and community building. He highlighted the significant contributions of the business community in fostering peace and development within society.
“I encourage you to continue your crucial work in protecting our tax revenue by reinforcing the fight against illicit tobacco trading,” Paragas said.
The excise tax on tobacco in the Philippines has been a crucial element in nation-building, significantly contributing to government projects and essential services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
The Philippine economy has greatly benefited from the tobacco industry’s substantial contributions. However, this year has seen a decline in tobacco excise tax collection, dropping from P160.55 billion in 2022 to P134.87 billion as of April 2023. This reduction impacts the country’s health budget and the support for tobacco farmers and tobacco-growing areas. Despite these challenges, the tobacco industry remains integral in advancing corporate social responsibility and community engagement.

Moreover, the tobacco industry in the Philippines generates jobs, supports families, and sustains communities. Businesses play a vital role in promoting peace and community building, contributing to economic stability.
Paragas emphasized the need for collaboration among local government units and law enforcement to ensure safety and security. “Sharing information, resources, and coordinating strategies will enhance our ability to identify illicit networks,” he added, stressing the importance of combating illicit tobacco trading. Supporting illegal tobacco products harms and steals from the community, underlining the need for continued vigilance and cooperation. (EDT/MLE/DBE-GIP/PIA Region 9-Zamboanga City)
