UN official to media: Make the unseen, seen

PASAY CITY, (PIA) — Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Kamal Kishore acknowledged the role of media in times of disasters during the closing press conference for the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City on Thursday.

The media does an excellent job of telling the story of disasters when they happen. They play an important role in highlighting the gaps in response towards disaster,” said Kishore.

The UNDRR official acknowledged the strong engagement of participants during the conference, noting the quality of discussions held.

He noted some of the key features discussed during the conference including, greater emphasis on financing for disaster reduction, stronger participation of local governments and their roles on disaster risk reduction (DRR), strong engagement of the private sector, inclusion on gender, persons with disabilities (PWDs),

Indigenous Peoples, and other marginalized group, and concrete discussions between DRR and climate risk reduction.

Kishore encouraged the media to further talk about stories of disaster risk and what needs to be done to reduce that disaster risk to make the unseen seen.

Likewise, Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga recognized the value of the country’s hosting of the international conference and how it has helped all participants elevate the discussion regarding disaster risk reduction. (JEG/PIA-NCR)
