SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – The University of Northern Philippines in Ilocos Sur clinched the top two spots during the 27th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Regional Championship in Ilocos Region held in this city on November 10.
Kenji Idica, a Bachelor of Science in Physics student at UNP, was named Region 1’s young statistics champion this year.
On the other hand, Russel Jay Fuentesfina, another BS Physics student of UNP, earned second place during the competition.
“Puspusan ang naging pagrereview namin, minsan ay mayroon din kaming ginagawang group review,” UNP coach Randolf Agup said.
Further, ranking third is Elvis Tabugader, Jr., a student of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the Mariano Marcos State University in Ilocos Norte.
A total of 12 students from different universities and colleges in the region competed during the regional finals.
The board of judges, composed of representatives from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Department of Education, and Department of Trade and Industry, along with the members of the steering committee, oversaw the fair conduct of the contest.

The Philippine Statistics Authority, in partnership with the Philippine Statistics Association, Inc., staged the 27th Philippine Statistics Quiz Regional Championship in San Fernando City, La Union on Nov. 10.
Winners received various prizes and plaques of recognition while non-winners were given consolation prizes.
According to Philippine Statistics Authority-Regional Statistical Services Office 1 Regional Director Sheila De Guzman, Idica will represent the region during the upcoming national championship in Manila on December 7.
PSQ is a nationwide annual contest designed to test the knowledge and competence in statistics of freshmen college students. (JCR/AMB/CGRC/PIA Region 1)
