Vigan City offers free pet neutering to keep rabies at bay

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur (PIA) – To maintain zero rabies cases in the city, the Vigan City Veterinary Office conducted free spaying and neutering for dogs and cats on December 10–11, 2024, at Barangay Purok a Bassit and Barangay VIII.

Now in its third year, the program successfully catered to 315 pets—69 dogs (48 male and 21 female) and 246 cats (133 female and 113 male).

Dr. Rayeth Robeniol, Vigan City Veterinary Officer, said that the initiative supports the city’s “Stray Animal Regulation” ordinance, which promotes humane population control as part of its rabies prevention strategy.

“This program complements our house-to-house rabies vaccination efforts. By spaying and neutering pets, we help prevent rabies and address issues like stray animals causing vehicular accidents,” Robeniol said.

Robeniol further emphasized the additional medical benefits of spaying and neutering pets and urged owners to keep their pets leashed or caged for safety.

This year’s activity was made possible through partnerships with the Biyaya Foundation, private companies, and local clinics.

Pet owner Princess Abella from Barangay Cabalangegan meanwhile expressed her gratitude for the program.

“It’s a big help, especially since these procedures are usually costly. I make sure my pets are vaccinated and healthy to avoid sickness and rabies,” she said.

Robeniol noted that the city has reported no rabies cases in 2024, thanks to continuous information campaigns and consistent rabies vaccinations. She hopes more pet owners will participate in future spay/neuter activities to ensure the safety of both pets and the community.

The Vigan City Veterinary Office remains committed to its annual programs aimed at protecting public health and ensuring responsible pet ownership. (CCMT/ATV, PIA Ilocos Sur)
