Village water impounding project selected as BFAR’s ‘Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa’ project area

CABARROGUIS, Quirino (PIA)- – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) recently announced that the Dagupan Small Water Impounding Project in Dagupan, Aglipay, Quirino was selected as the priority management area for this year’s Balik Sigla Sa Ilog at Lawa Project (BASIL) project.

The BASIL is a national program on the fisheries enhancement of inland waters aimed at rehabilitating and restoring the natural condition of natural and man-made reservoirs.

To implement the project, BFAR recently conducted a capacity-building activity with the Asosayon ng mga Mangingisda ng Dagupan (AMADA) leaders and members.

Christopher Casco, BFAR provincial head, said during the activity, the participants, led by vice chair Junar Gamay, along with the barangay local government unit and the Municipal Agriculture representatives were able to physically assess the current situation of Dagupan SWIP as part of project planning and implementation.

Christopher Casco, BFAR Quirino head, said the components of the project are habitat restoration, habitat structure establishment, and fisheries enhancement that include native fish repopulating, broodstock stocking, project monitoring, and project evaluation.

The said project is set to be completed in September this year.

“We have high hopes for Dagupan SWIP to be naturally abundant with freshwater food fish enough for barangay Dagupan and other nearby barangays to feast on in the future,” Casco said. (OTB/TCB/PIA Quirino)
