BONTOC, Mountain Province (PIA) – Hundreds of participants from national and local government units including residents of the different barangays of the capital town of Bontoc participated in the “Walk for a Fire-Free and Safe Community” and other engaging events on March 1, 2025 that kicked off the observance of Fire Prevention Month.
Led by the Bureau of Fire Protection, the observance with the theme “Sa pag-iwas sa sunog, hindi ka nag-iisa,” aims to unite government and local government offices and public in the fight against destructive fires.
The kick-off also featured “Sayaw Laban Sa Sunog”, a motorcasde and a program.
“Our tagline – ‘Sa pag iwas sa sunog, hindi ka nag iisa’ is a call for a community tapnu mabasawan tayu ti destructive fire,” Acting Provincial Fire Marshall Fire Chief Inspector Mary Grace M. Balao-as said.
She noted that most fire incidents in the Cordillera region are accidental in nature. If the communities know how to prevent destructive fire, fire incidents will be lessened, she said.
Balao-as emphasized that fire safety or fire prevention is a concern of everybody and it entails lifetime commitment and dedication.
“Let this month serve as a reminder to us all that we should always commit to our responsibilities to the community wherein we should always keep it safe from fire” F Inspector Calvin B. Mondero, Acting Municipal Fire Marshall of Bontoc Fire station added.
Balao-as expressed her gratitude to everyone who participated saying their involvement shows a strong support for the goal of a fire-free community.
Adam Paleyan, Supervising Ecosystems Specialist of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Mountain Province who was the guest speaker, emphasized that achieving a fire-free community requires collective effort in prevention.

March is declared as Fire Prevention Month thru Proclamation No. 115-A to raise fire safety consciousness and promote accident prevention. (JDP/VJLT- PIA CAR, Mountain Province)
