WesMinCom commits to end rido in BARMM

Zamboanga City (PIA) – The Western Mindanao Command (WESMINCOM) is dedicated to addressing rido cases in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as part of its military operations.

The 101st Infantry Brigade unites feuding families in Sumisip, Basilan. The standing active rido between the group of Midznim Asjad and the group of Nasser Buena came to an end as both parties as they willfully reconciled their differences and submitted themselves to an amicable settlement. Each party surrendered one M16 rifle as a gesture of sincerity.

Sa 101st Infantry Brigade (in Basilan) nagkaroon ng maraming rido settlement sa iba’t-ibang armed groups and family related conflicts. Nagkaroon sila ng maayos na pag-uusap  upang wakasan ang rido,”(In the 101st Infantry Brigade in Basilan, there have been numerous rido settlements involving various armed groups and family-related conflicts. They have conducted proper discussions to resolve these issues) said Brigadier General Aldrin S Annani, PAF, Deputy Commander for External  Defense Operations of WESMINCOM.

During the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas episode with WESMINCOM, Deputy Commander for External Defense Operations Brigadier General Aldrin S Annani, PAF reports on its military operations in its efforts to keep the peace in Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

Rido refers to a form of clan feud or violent conflict typically involving families or kinship groups in certain parts of the Philippines, particularly in Mindanao and among some Muslim communities. These conflicts can be triggered by various reasons, such as land disputes, political rivalry, personal grievances, or issues of honor.

Rido often leads to cycles of retaliatory violence, which can span generations if not resolved. Traditionally, resolving rido involves mediation by elders, local leaders, or community-based peace processes. Addressing rido is crucial for maintaining peace and order in the affected regions.

BGen Annani highlighted the efforts of the BARMM government to address this issue and noted the passage of a resolution aimed at ending this type of violence. With this resolution, the Bangsamoro Task Force – Ending Local Armed Conflict (BTF-ELAC) coordinating mechanism for rido settlement was established.

Nagkaroon po tayo ng BTF-ELAC coordinating mechanism for rido settlement. Hindi lang ito sa Basilan, sa buong area ito ng BARMM. Hopefully, by this mawawakasan natin ang horizontal conflict,” (We have established the BTF-ELAC coordinating mechanism for rido settlement. This is not only for Basilan but for the entire BARMM area. Hopefully, with this initiative, we can put an end to horizontal conflicts) BGen Annani said. (JPA/CCP/PIA9)
