PAGADIAN CITY (PIA) — Over 50 women from government agencies in this city participated in self-defense training, learning basic Taekwondo techniques to protect themselves from potential attackers.
Unlike other martial arts, Taekwondo is considered one of the best, especially for those who aspire to learn self-defense. It stands out for its dynamic, high-energy movements and emphasis on powerful kicks, making it an effective self-defense technique in real-life situations.
A participant, Rachel Alvarez-Takilid, from the Commission and Population Development (CPD) said this activity is relevant as it empowers women to protect and defend themselves against harm.
“It gave me confidence. In times of possible harm, I can defend myself,” she said.
Meanwhile, Vallie Grace Ebgos, from the National Irrigation Administration said that she is thankful to have joined the activity.
“It gives us an idea that we can protect ourselves, especially that crimes may happen everywhere, in our household or in the office setting,” Ebgos said.
The Simultaneous Self-Defense Training, led by the Regional Gender and Development Committee (RGADC), is being conducted across the Zamboanga Peninsula in celebration of Women’s Month.
This activity aims to equip women in government with essential skills for protection and confidence. In the spirit of inclusivity, men also join the training, reinforcing the shared responsibility of safety and empowerment.
Pagadian City Police Corporal Renjie Narciso led the training.
Pagadian City Police Corporal Renjie Narciso, a former taekwondo athlete who competed during his high school and college years, led the training, sharing his knowledge and experience in self-defense
Between physical demonstrations, Narciso reminded the participants, especially the women, about laws that protect them, such as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act and the Safe Spaces Act (Anti-Bastos Law).
“Women are well protected by law,” he emphasized.
Among the agencies who join the activity are the CPD, NIA, the Department of Science and Technology and the Philippine Information Agency. (EDT/CCP/PIA9)
