MAASIN CITY (PIA) — A farm-to-market (FMR) road project funded by a World Bank grant under its Philippine Rural Road Development Program (PRRD) costing P180 million in this ciity is about to start.

The project will connect the upland, interior barangays of Hantag and Laboon, a distance of 4.1 kilometers, City Councilor Zaldy Olita reported in a live radio broadcast phone patch last week.

The city government has a counterpart fund of P16 million for the project which will be used mostly for payment of road right of way in private lands that may be traversed by the road stretch, Olita said in a follow-up phone interview by PIA.

Work for its construction has a duration of 350 calendar days, counting on the first day the project shall have begun, Olita said, adding that processing for the project took six (6) years to complete, starting when the present Vice Mayor Maloney Samaco was still the mayor then.

He explained the beneficial impact of the project for residents of Hantag and Laboon, and those of the neighboring barangays, especially on the aspect of mobility.

Those coming from the Hantag side shall have quick access in going to the provindial hospital the moment it can be transferred back to the original location in barangay Dongon, or in going to the provincial capitol for those who may have business there and the surrounding national offices.

From the Laboon side, the upcoming new road network shall offer a shortcut way in going to the city proper. (LDL/MMP/PIA Southern Leyte)
