XU stude champs 27th PH Statistics Quiz in North Mindanao

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–Ibrahim P. Alonto, a BS Civil Engineering student of Xavier University (XU)–Ateneo de Cagayan, was named the young statistics champion of Northern Mindanao after he bested other 14 provincial winners in the regional level of the 27th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) held at the Mallberry Suites Business Hotel, this city on November 10, 2023.

Alonto scored 33 out of 40 points, securing the top rank. He received a cash prize and a PSQ-designed plaque. His coach, Pejie C. Santillan, also received a token, while Xavier University attained a Certificate of Recognition.

Alonto is now the region’s representative in the upcoming national finals in Metro Manila on December 7, 2023. He will compete with the other 16 regional champions.

Completing the top three regional winners of Region X were Reynaldo Saliot, Jr. (2nd Place), a BS Mathematics student from Central Mindanao University who garnered 30 points, and Carl Josef Carbonilla (3rd Place), a BS Civil Engineering student who garnered 27 points also from XU. Both winners received a PSQ-designed plaque and cash prizes.

Cagayan de Oro Mayor Rolando Uy sponsored the cash prizes for the regional champions.

Other provincial winners who joined the contest were Ella Louise Borja of Central Mindanao University, Jovelyn Paderon and John Paul Damuag of Tangub City Global College, Sendrilla Louise Dagondon and David Galagar of Fatima College of Camiguin, Inc., Preach Love Paulican of Mountain View College, Francis Ong of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, Jayson Oppus of Camiguin Polytechnic State College, Ahron Catada of University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines- Oroquieta, Andres John Calimutan, Kyle Vincent Salicid, and Georinah Velasco of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology.

Started in 1992, the PSQ is a nationwide search for young statistics whizzes designed to test knowledge and competence in statistics of freshmen college.

The Philippine Statistics Authority and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc., a non-stock, non-profit organization of professional statisticians from government and non-government agencies and the academe, organize the activity. (PSA-10/PIA-10)
