ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) – Zamboanga City Government under the leadership of Mayor John Dalipe directs the City Administrator to fast track the road projects, which will solve traffic congestion in the city.
Zamboangeños escalates complains on traffic jam since the reopening of classes recently in Zamboanga City. However, Assistant City Administrator for City Affairs, Rodolfo Saavedra Jr., attributed the heavy to moderate traffic congestion to a combination of factors, including ongoing road repairs, drainage and flood control projects, and the reopening of schools.
The City Administrator’s Office in Zamboanga City is committed to alleviating the persistent traffic congestion that has been causing frustration for both motorists and the public.
The projects contributing to traffic congestion encompass a range of vital initiatives. These include the Veterans Avenue Flood Control Project, which impacts six road intersections, the Governor Lim Avenue Flood Control Project, affecting four streets, and the Flyover Project, which influences two outer lanes of Gov. Camins Ave., the intersection of Gov. Camins and Veterans Ave., and two outer lanes of MCLL Highway.
Additionally, road rehabilitation work is underway on Guadalupe Drive leading to the old highway in Guiwan, the San Bernardino Bridge Rehabilitation Project’s eastbound lane in Tetuan, Estrada St in Tetuan, the flood control project at Don Alfaro St, Veterans Ave, Gov. Alvarez St, and the flood control project at Crispin Atilano St in Tetuan, among others.
These projects are one of the priorities of the administration to avoid flooding incidents in different barangays and areas of the city as well as to address traffic with the opening of new roads.
Saavedra emphasized that his office is actively collaborating with relevant agencies and departments, such as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the City Engineer’s Office, to closely monitor the progress of these critical infrastructure projects. The goal is to expedite their completion to relieve traffic woes as soon as possible.
Saavedra also highlighted a new measure being considered to alleviate traffic problems—the establishment of a dedicated division within the City Administrator’s Office. This division, proposed through an ordinance certified as urgent by Mayor Dalipe, is currently under deliberation in the Sangguniang Panlungsod. Its creation would bring additional personnel and resources to address traffic issues effectively.
Furthermore, road clearing operations are actively underway to remove illegally parked vehicles and obstructions on all roads and streets, which are significant contributors to traffic congestion. (RVC/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
