Zambo City hosts Sardines Industry Congress, unveiling innovation for sustainable growth

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) — Zamboanga City, known as the Sardine Capital of the Philippines, hosted the 6th National Sardines Industry Congress and Trade Exhibit 2023 with 14 sardine canning factories and 17 sardine brands from November 16 to 17.

The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR IX) and the Southern Philippines Fishing Association Inc. (SOPHIL) organized the two-day event, aimed at fostering collaboration, showcasing cutting-edge products and technologies, and catalyzing growth within the sardine sector.

“The sardines industry is a lifeline for many of our citizens, providing sustenance, employment, and a source of pride. It is the cornerstone of our nation’s food security and economic resilience. The richness of our seas, combined with the dedication and expertise of those in the sardine’s industry, positions our country as a key player in the global market,” he said.

One of the exhibitors in the congress is the Mega Sardines which is also known to be one of the biggest sardine company in the Philippines.

A total of 22 exhibitors from across the Philippines gathered to display not just their products but also their passion and innovations. AGRI Party-list Rep. Wilbert T. Lee underscored the pivotal role of strengthening partnerships between the government and the private sector, emphasizing the need to develop industries that contribute to economic development and food security.

Lee highlighted the vast potential of marine resources in the Philippines, highlighting that the country is recognized as the fifth country with the longest coastline in the world, and the bounty of seas is one of the country’s greatest resources.

However, the challenge is how to sustainably maximize the marine resources so that people can reap its economic rewards while ensuring that future generations of Filipinos can also benefit from Philippine waters.

“Kung magawa natin ito, winner tayo lahat, hindi lang ang kasalukuyang henerasyon kundi pati na rin ang susunod pang mga henerasyon[“If we can achieve this, we all become winners—not only the present generation but also the succeeding generations],” he added.
