DIPOLOG CITY (PIA)—The Moliton Abaca Farmers Association (MAFA) from the Municipality of President Manuel A. Roxas recently received three (3) units of Abaca Single Spindle Stripping Machines with Tuxying, courtesy of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST’s) Grant-in-Aid (GIA) program.

Led by their Provincial Science and Technology Office in Zamboanga del Norte, the turnover of these equipment aims to enhance the livelihood of local farmers by increasing their production of higher-grade abaca fibers, which in turn command higher selling prices in the market.

Following the turnover, the association’s thirty (30) active members participated in a hands-on training session on proper abaca harvesting techniques, as well as a demonstration on the operation and maintenance of the machines.

Partnering with the Department of Agriculture – Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (DA-PhilFIDA), the DOST ensured that the farmers were equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to maximize the benefit of their new equipment.

“We are incredibly grateful to DOST for having this program,” said Joseph Duhig, the association’s president.

“We’ll make sure to treasure and take care of these machines and utilize them to boost our livelihood,” he added.

Aside from the promise of improved income opportunities, the project is also expected to boost productivity and strengthen the abaca industry in the province.

For more updates on science, technology, and innovation-driven initiatives in the province, the DOST highly encourages the public to visit their website or drop by their provincial offices. (PJF/PIA9-Zamboanga del Norte)
