Zamboanga City enhances tourism through culture-centric Verano Festival

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) – The City Government, through the Tourism Office, is launching the Verano Festival, a summer project that showcases Zamboanga’s cultural heritage and community spirit.

“The Verano Festival is a component of the city’s annual tourism calendar,” stated City Tourism Officer Sarita Sebastian Hernandez. “The aim is to establish Zamboanga City as a prime summer destination in Mindanao.”

This May’s activities include the Kite Festival, the Once Islas Food Festival, which features traditional Muslim dishes representing barangays Panubigan and Dita, and the Festival de las Bellas y Flores, where participants don Filipiniana-inspired gowns.

“These initiatives are designed to be inclusive, engaging both city-based and remote barangays, including island communities,” Hernandez explained.

Since April, the city has recorded an increase in tourist arrivals, driven by its proactive role in MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events. “We leverage social media and collaborate with vloggers and content creators to enhance our marketing and outreach endeavors,” she remarked.

Tourism activities are benefiting local businesses, particularly at popular venues like Paseo del Mar and the City Grandstand. The Tourism Office also prioritizes safety and support by coordinating with security forces and offering free itinerary planning.

In addition to summer, Zamboanga provides themed tours, including culinary, cultural, birdwatching, and golf experiences. Its golf course is the second oldest in the Philippines, attracting international birdwatchers drawn to the city’s endemic species.

“The backing of the local chief executive is vital for sustaining and expanding tourism ventures,” Hernandez stressed. Future plans aim to extend the festival’s influence to more barangays and tourism locations.
