ZAMBOANGA CITY – Zamboanga City marked the 80th anniversary of its liberation from Japanese occupation with a solemn tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of Filipino and Allied forces who fought for the city’s freedom during the second World War.

Anchored on the theme “Balik Tanaw sa Boluntaryong Sakripisyo ng mga Beterano Noong Pangalawang Digmaan Alang-Alang sa Demokrasya ng mga Pilipino” (Remembering the Voluntary Sacrifices of Veterans During World War II for the Democracy of Filipinos), the event emphasized the significance of patriotism, unity and resilience in preserving historical legacies for future generations.

Deputy Speaker Raymund Democrito Mendoza graced the event and highlighted the sacrifices of the fallen Filipino and American soldiers who joined forces against the Japanese occupiers.

“The bravery and sacrifices of the fallen Filipino and American soldiers who fought together against the Japanese occupiers serve as a lasting reminder for future generations to uphold patriotism, unity and resilience while preserving their legacy for a peaceful and progressive nation,” he added.

The event commenced with a wreath-laying ceremony and a 21-gun salute at Yellow Beach in Barangay Sinunuc, the historic landing site where allied forces, alongside Filipino guerrillas, launched the liberation of Zamboanga on March 10, 1945.

A reenactment of the battle at Naval Station Romulo Espaldon allowed attendees to relive the sacrifices of the fallen heroes.

Government officials, military representatives and veteran organizations participated in the commemoration, recognizing the contributions of Filipino veterans and American forces in securing the city’s freedom. The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, the Veterans Federation of the Philippines—Sons and Daughters, Inc., and members of the U.S. Army also joined the tribute, reinforcing the importance of remembering history and educating the younger generation about the country’s wartime struggles.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office pledged to continue delivering essential services to Zamboangueño veterans and their families, personally visiting their homes and conducting regular check-ins to ensure that support reaches the elderly.

Beyond remembrance, the event also highlighted the need for continued support for war veterans and their families, ensuring their heroism is honored not just in ceremonies but through sustainable assistance programs. (EDT/MLE/PIA Region 9-Zamboanga City/With reports from Zamboanga City PIO)
