Zamboanga Peninsula prepares for La Niña

ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR, (PIA) – Members and stakeholders of the Disaster Preparedness Committee convened for their second regular meeting, preparing for the incoming La Nina weather phenomenon.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDDRMO) is currently undertaking preparations for the rainy season. 

Ronie Villanueva, an officer of the PDRRMO, emphasized the importance of the community’s preparedness in ensuring safety during calamities.

“We are preparing a rehabilitation center for the people’s safety from calamities and for La Niña,” Villanueva said.

Villanueva also stated that they will conduct training and drills for disaster response teams and the community to ensure readiness in the event of floods. Additionally, the PDDRMO is checking the inventory of their equipment and other resources.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)-9 recently provided an update on the current El Niño Advisory and La Niña Watch. Their report highlights critical weather changes and their potential impacts on the region.

Rodel Inclan of PAGASA-9 shared said that the El Niño in the tropical pacific is getting weaker, but it’s still affecting parts of Zamboanga Peninsula. He also mentioned that by June 2024, we might shift to normal weather conditions. There’s a 69 percent chance that the La Niña will come during July to September 2024. (JPA/HTB/EMAM/PIA9)
