As the reverent observance of Holy Week approaches, the Philippines braces itself for an influx of travelers seeking solace, spirituality, and a much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Amidst the excitement and anticipation of this hallowed season, however, the Department of Tourism (DOT) has issued a timely advisory, reminding the public of the paramount importance of "traveling wisely and responsibly."

Travel wisely

"Travelers needing accommodation, tours, transportation, and other tourism-related services are strongly advised to patronize DOT-accredited tourism enterprises. Accreditation by the DOT recognizes establishments as having complied with the Department's minimum standards set to ensure quality operation of tourism facilities and services," the agency said.

"The public is advised to stay updated on travel-related news and safety guidelines from credible sources, and to be cautious of unsolicited messages or offers, particularly from anonymous sources or unverified social media platforms or accounts, to avoid falling victim to scams targeting tourists, such as fake accommodation, travel tickets, vacation deals, among others," it added.

Choose accredited services

For the nationwide list of accredited hotels, travel agencies, tour operators, and other tourism enterprises, please visit: https://beta.tourism.gov.ph/accreditations/#dot-accredited.

For guidance and assistance on general tourism inquiries, DOT accreditation, travel complaints and other emergencies, the DOT Tourist Assistance Call Center will also remain open to the public 24/7  via hotline number 151-TOUR / 151-8687, mobile number +63995-835-5155, and the following platforms: e-mail address touristassistance@tourism.gov.ph; Facebook messenger at https://www.facebook.com/DepartmentOfTourism; or web chat at https://philippines.travel/ and https://beta.tourism.gov.ph/.

The DOT's advisory serves as a clarion call for travelers to exercise caution and discernment when making arrangements for their Holy Week journeys. By patronizing DOT-accredited tourism enterprises, holidaymakers can rest assured that they are engaging with establishments that have met the Department's stringent standards for quality operation, ensuring a safe and enjoyable travel experience.

On the other hand, its accreditation process, the DOT said, is a testament to the commitment of these businesses to upholding the highest levels of service, safety, and ethical practices. By choosing accredited hotels, travel agencies, tour operators, and other tourism-related services, travelers can navigate the often-treacherous landscape of travel scams and unsolicited offers with confidence, shielding themselves from the perils of fake accommodation, fraudulent vacation deals, and other nefarious schemes that prey on the unsuspecting.

Stay Informed

The DOT's advisory also underscores the importance of staying informed and vigilant, encouraging travelers to seek out credible sources of information and exercise caution when engaging with anonymous or unverified social media platforms or accounts. In an age where misinformation can spread like wildfire, this guidance serves as a bulwark against falling victim to scams and ensuring a truly memorable and worry-free Holy Week vacation experience.

Moreover, the DOT has taken proactive steps to empower travelers by providing a comprehensive nationwide list of accredited tourism enterprises, accessible through the Department's official website. This invaluable resource not only simplifies the process of identifying trustworthy establishments but also serves as a powerful tool for making informed decisions that prioritize safety, quality, and ethical practices.

Recognizing the potential for travel-related emergencies and the need for prompt assistance, the DOT has further bolstered its commitment to traveler safety by ensuring that its Tourist Assistance Call Center remains operational 24/7. Through this dedicated helpline, travelers can access guidance, report complaints, and seek immediate support, ensuring that their concerns are addressed swiftly and effectively

The DOT's advisory is not merely a set of recommendations; it is a call to action, urging travelers to embrace a mindset of responsible tourism. By adhering to these guidelines, we not only safeguard our own well-being but also contribute to the sustainability and ethical practices of the tourism industry as a whole.

As we embark on our Holy Week journeys, let us heed the DOT's reminder and honor the sanctity of this sacred time by traveling responsibly.

By patronizing accredited establishments, staying vigilant against scams, and seeking credible information sources, we can truly unlock the transformative power of meaningful travel – a journey that nourishes the soul, enriches the mind, and creates lasting memories. (JVD/PIA-NCR)
