Caraga RDC endorses construction of grain processing center in Surigao Sur

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur (PIA) – The Caraga Regional Development Council (RDC) recently endorsed the establishment and construction of an integrated grain processing center in San Miguel, Surigao del Sur as included in the top three priority projects of the region.

This endorsement will be included in the meeting of all RDC chairpersons with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in April, as this project served as a strategic initiative to bolster agricultural productivity in the region.

As reported during the recent Joint Caraga RDC Full Council-Advisory Committee meeting in Butuan City, the project required a budget of P203 million and an implementation period of 2024-2028 .

This facility will physically process various grains produced by the local farmers in the region, such as rice, corn, and soybeans, whereby the kernel is cleaned and adjusted to an appropriate moisture content and then mechanically reduced to the desired particle size to produce flour and other by-products.

The grain processing center, as authored and proposed by the Magroyong Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative (MAFAMUCO), had its ceremonial groundbreaking on Jan. 18.

MAFAMUCO chairperson Joeirene Campomanes said, “This good news is a product of the collaborative efforts of the different government agencies and the local government units involved for the realization of the project, which will fulfill the government’s commitment to improve the agricultural infrastructure in the region and support to the local farmers.”

The said meeting also endorsed two more projects, namely, Surigao City-Nonoc Island-Dinagat-Leyte Road Network and the full functionality of Level III hospitals—upgrading of Level I and II hospitals in the region, which required an aggregate investment of P231.62 billion.
