DOST introduces solar technology to enhance coffee production in Eastern Samar

SALCEDO, Eastern Samar (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) has recently turned over five units of multi-purpose grain solar speed drying trays, known as PORTASOL, to the Tagbacan Coconut Farmers Organization.

The organization, based in this municipality, is a thriving community known for its locally produced, quality coffee-based products in the region.

Raymundo C. Awa-ao Jr., president of the organization, expressed his gratitude for the DOST’s support and assistance.

Awa-ao said the PORTASOL will undoubtedly contribute to further enhancing their coffee processing and agricultural practices and improving their livelihoods.

Mark William V. Gonzales, senior science research specialist, and Engr. Anna Raquel A. Condrada of DOST PSTO facilitated the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and the turnover of the units.

“This initiative aims to boost farmers' agricultural productivity and enhance the quality of their crops while reducing post-harvest losses,” Gonzales said.

The innovative technology was created by Filipino inventor Francisco Pagayon, president of the Filipino Inventors Society Producer Cooperative (FISPC).

PORTASOLis a multi-purpose solar dryer with a stackable set of thermal-drying aluminum speed-drying trays that efficiently dry various grain-based agricultural products using solar energy.

It is cleaner, more space-efficient, and specifically designed to reduce the moisture content of large produce volumes with a two- to three-times faster drying process than traditional methods. It also enhances the quality of the crops and reduces post-harvest losses.

“The partnership between DOST PSTO Eastern Samar and the Tagbacan Coconut Farmers Association is a prime example of how collaborative efforts can positively impact local development and sustainability,” Gonzales added.

This STI intervention is a significant milestone in DOST's commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and empowering local communities. (VTG, PIA Eastern Samar)
