PBBM enacts law creating Catarman University College of Medicine

CATARMAN, Northern Samar (PIA) -- President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed Republic Act 11972, a law establishing the College of Medicine at the University of Eastern Philippines (UEP) in this capital town.

Northern Samar First District Rep. Paul Daza said the UEP’s soon-to-open Doctor of Medicine Program, with its Integrated Liberal Arts and Medicine curriculum, aims to cultivate a new generation of physicians through a learner-centered, competency-based, and community-oriented approach.

“By focusing on basic science and clinical courses, the program not only equips students with essential medical knowledge but also fosters a deep connection to the communities they serve, addressing the healthcare system’s needs in the province and region,” he added.

A nursing student at the UEP commented that the opening of the medical college will help parents save on costs since private medical schools are very expensive.

“Studying medicine at the University of Eastern Philippines offers a unique opportunity for aspiring doctors from financially struggling families who may find it challenging to pursue their dreams in Manila,” said Betty Jane Tayactac.

Aside from being more affordable, a College of Medicine in the province offers convenience to students living with their parents, Tayactac said. (TBC, PIA Northern Samar)
