CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- Residents of Barangay Dao in the town of Naujan in Oriental Mindoro used to consider the proliferation of water lilies as a nuisance.

Water lilies were multiplied rapidly and clog waterways, block drainage systems, and cause flooding.

With the help of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), a group of residents who are also members of the Dao Water Lily Association underwent training to turn water lilies into beautiful handicraft.

The DTI Negosyo Center and the local government have joined together to help the organization develop the business and expand production of bags, baskets, purses, sandals, slippers, hats, and many others made from dried water lilies.

DTI also helped the members introduce their handicraft products to the market by letting them participate in trade fairs in and out of the region.

One of the members of the organization said that weaving water lilies has already become their way of life since they found out that these plants can be a good source of livelihood.

“Yung proseso po ng paggawa ng isang pinong produkto ay mahirap ngunit kapag nakita mo naman na yung output o kinalabasan na pinahahalagahan ng marami ay sapat na reward na,”

[“The process of making a refined product is hard but once you see the output being appreciated by many is enough reward.”]

She added that their association is very grateful to DTI for the training that helped them to better cultivate their weaving skills.

“Lubos kaming nagpapasalamat sa DTI sa pagbibigay sa amin ng kinakailangang pagsasanay sa kasanayan na nakatulong talaga sa amin sa pag-unlad ng aming gawain,”

[“We are most thankful for DTI for providing us the necessary skills training that helped us along the way to improve our craft.”]

Meanwhile, the Dao Water Lily Mini Park is now also a tourist attraction which features the beautiful view of Mount Halcon. Visitors may also try their delicious food, and experience ultimate bliss aboard a floating cottage. (GATS/PIA MIMAROPA)
