Directors Factory PH lauds Dapitanon actors in Cannes casting; supports Dapitan's aim as country's film capital

DAPITAN CITY (PIA) - Ambitious it may sound, but Dapitan is dipping its toes in the film-making industry, aiming for greatness and the summit of screenplay as the Film Capital of the Philippines.

Four of the short films listed for viewing at the prestigious Director's Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival were shot in the historic city of Dapitan.

We all know how Dapitan got its reputation, history-wise, and how this small city on the northwestern coast of the island of Mindanao impacted history when the National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal was banished to the area to spend the last four years of his life, from 1892 to 1896, before his execution five months later.

To the whole world, Dapitan is a place of exile and punishment for the national hero; to the Dapitanons, it was an opportunity to learn from the great man himself.

Over a century later, the mark left by Dr. Rizal in the place inspired not only historians but now filmmakers as well to capture the cinematic view of the place. Dapitan is going to Cannes.

French Director Ms. Dominique Welinski, who is also a producer and film curator of the Directors Factory Philippines, expressed her admiration for Dapitan and the support shown by the local government unit, which has been instrumental to the success of the production of the four films.

"Everything here was just feasible. Looking at the main street of the city, shooting in the church for a first communion scene, both are feasible. Every single Manok and Baboy is feasible," she jests, noting the openness of the city to be part of the film production with some of the Filipino words she learned along the way.

"We had a wonderful time, and I became very emotional. The way we were welcomed here was really unique," she said.

Mr. Bradley Liew, CEO of Epicmedia, shared his experience filming in Dapitan and his gratitude for the special accommodation they were provided. "We have done a lot of films through the decade, but I have never experienced something where the entire city welcomed cinema like this," he noted.

He related how it was so easy to shoot the scenes they envision for the four films in Dapitan. "When you ask the directors what you want to do, they say they can do anything, and I feel creativity had no limitations when they were here in Dapitan," he opined.

The director declared he is very willing to share and spread the word to all filmmakers about how great Dapitan is as a place he personally visited and experienced. "The experience here has been really incredible. Even for someone who is making films in the Philippines, this place is really special for cinema."

The Director's Factory Philippines has partnered with the City Government of Dapitan for the production of four short films entitled “Taking Flight,” “Silig,” “Cold Cut,” and “Strange Home” which are slated to be shown at the Director's Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival.

According to Ms. Bianca Balbuena-Liew, head of Studios Anima and former CEO of Epicmedia, the Director's Factory Philippines, which is supported by Cannes Directors Fortnight, has been running for ten years now, and it is the first time to be set in Southeast Asia, and the Philippines at that.

"All four short films are set in Dapitan, so it’s a way of showcasing film tourism in Dapitan," she said.

She emphasized the potential of Dapitan as a film hub, saying, "This is the best opportunity to advertise to the world that we can shoot mountains, beaches, small towns, churches, whatever in Dapitan."

Along with other directors who visited Dapitan, she vowed to advertise Dapitan as a great film location. "The very time we visited Dapitan, we saw everything; we saw mountains; we saw a tree overlooking Dapitan; we saw beaches and fishing villages," she said.

However, above all the great scenery, she underlined the hospitality of the Dapitanons as "truly unparalleled."

The directors also lauded the talents shown by Dapitanons in acting when they auditioned for the short films.

"They were really great, good actors. We did not expect we have hidden gems here in Dapitan, especially in the art of acting," said Casting Director Ryanne Murcia, who shared her amazement at the skills shown by the Dapitanon actors.

One of the four short films cast Dapitanons, a girl and a boy, as lead actors, while a total of 85 local talents were hired as extras. The films were directed by Filipino directors and co-directed by Asian directors.

City Mayor Seth Frederick "Bullet" Jalosjos said the celebration of the successful shoot of the films for the Director's Fortnight at Cannes is only the beginning of the greater heights Dapitan is aiming to reach.

"We envision more creative collaborations like this, drawing filmmakers and artists to Dapitan to explore its history and hidden treasures. Because experiencing Dapitan isn't just about exploring a beautiful city; it's about experiencing a crucial chapter in Philippine history. It's about walking in Dr. Rizal's footsteps, understanding his struggles and triumphs," he said. (RVC/EDT/PIA Zamboanga del Norte)
